"I know that saying “I take the pill for reasons other than birth control” can feel like a cop-out, but its capacity to allow many of us to live normal lives shouldn’t be underestimated"

Quote taken from this article about the birth control pill.

This is something I feel very strongly about because I, too, am one of those women. It’s frustrating because people judge you for being on birth control without knowing anything about you or why you take it. There are so many misconceptions about birth control floating around in the world that what some women actually believe as fact astounds and enrages me.

Opponents of birth control spread lies just like the pro-lifer’s do because fear-mongering is the only way to prevent people from taking the pill. What opponents don’t realize, though, is that, in my case, I need birth control to function. Before I was on it I never knew when I was going to get my period, I had to miss classes and work because I couldn’t walk from the pain, there were times I threw-up because the pain was so terrible. Taking the pill has changed my life because I can actually have one now. I can’t imagine the life a woman would have with an unwanted child who would pose an even bigger inconvenience on her life.

The pill is an amazing example of human innovation and the great things it brings to the table are more than I think we could ever know. It’s able to protect women from unwanted pregnancies and can give them a completely different life than the one they had before the pill.

I also had the above issue mentioned by Rabble, plus bigger issues. Since my lining did not “shed” like it should due to irregular cycles, it built up (endometriosis). It became cancerous.  Having the pill keeps it from building up like that, lessening my risk of endometriosis and lessening my risk of cancer since I was denied the hysterectomy due to my age.  My use of the pill has nothing to do with sexual activity.

Oh, and it also keeps this lovely thing called PMDD away. Those mood swings were AWFUL! I could experience the entire gamut from happiness to extreme sobbing or laughing to homicidal rage within a 10-minute stretch and it’d last for 2 weeks at a time. It wasn’t pretty and I HATED that.  Having a regular cycle and my hormones kept from going apeshit makes it to where others can actually be around me.

The pill gives many of us our life back by enabling us to be able to get through our cycles without extreme pain, nausea, mood swings and decreases our chances of endometriosis.  By decreasing our chances of endometriosis, it increases our chances of a safe pregnancy when we decide to become pregnant because we do not have abnormal scar tissue build-up in the uterus, giving the placenta a better place to “stick”.

I'm single, Italian, Leo, and sarcastic. I don't hate men, I just hate the way some act. I'm pro-choice, feel everyone should be allowed to get married by the state, and a feminist who believes that no gender should be made to feel inferior to another.

BTW, you may see stuff from me show up as FrayedEdges. That's my default name and my art-related blog on here!!! :-)
